View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 4.3 MB of terrain data the first time.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Strawberry Mountain lookout stood in Okanogan County, Washington, in the Okanogan National Forest at 4,742 feet.1,2 Willhite notes there were two Strawberry Mountains with lookouts in the county.3 This one lies a few miles northeast of Mount Bonaparte, between Lost Lake and Bonaparte Lake.3 One list places it in the Colville National Forest, but the register, firelookout.com and the trip report all say Okanogan.1,2,3,4

A 1934 newspaper report described an emergency tower under construction, with a road to it.3,4 The register describes a 40-foot pole tower and L-5 cabin living quarters, built that year.1,3

During the war the site was used for aircraft detection, from August 21, 1942 to July 1, 1943.3

In 1954 the tower was shortened to 10 feet and used to train lookouts.1,3

The register says the tower was removed in 1963. Firelookout.com and the trip report say it was destroyed or burned that year.1,2,3

The trip report does not give a date in the text we read. It shows two footings at the site, with a third almost buried.3 We found no source that describes a standing structure. The route starts at Lost Lake, a hike of just under a mile each way with about 650 feet of climb.3 Most sources name the land as Okanogan National Forest, and none we read mentions a closure, but we found no official access rule, so check with the forest before you go.1,2,3,4
