View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Taneum Point's lookout went up in 1932 as a 40-foot timber L-4 tower, about two miles south of the Peoh Point lookout on the same ridge.1,2 The Former Fire Lookout Sites register added the site on August 15, 2012.1 Rex's page places it in the Wenatchee National Forest.2

Two pages say the tower was abandoned in 1962, and Willhite says it was used until about that time.1,2,3

Willhite's notes on a 1934 panorama record a 42-foot tower, plus another 15 feet at the cab roof.3 That does not match the 40 feet the other two pages give.1,2

The sources do not agree on how the tower ended. The register says it was removed in 1966, Rex's page says it was destroyed that year, and Willhite says it was destroyed by 1975.1,2,3

Willhite says the site is now a wide viewpoint beside a well-used Forest Service road, and that nothing at the site mentions the lookout.3 A few traces remain: eyebolts set in the ground that the guy lines were fastened to, and three of the concrete foundations dumped off the landing. You can find the foundations by dropping off to the west.3

Getting there starts in South Cle Elum, and the last stretch is a turn onto a spur where the lookout once stood.3 Willhite calls the road good gravel and says its upkeep suits any kind of vehicle.3 Check road conditions with the Forest Service before you go, and leave the old concrete where it lies.
