Story
Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Watch Mountain stands about three miles north of Randle, in Lewis County, Washington, above the north side of the Cowlitz Valley.1,2,3 The National Historic Lookout Register notes that several lookouts once stood along that stretch of the valley, and that this is the only one still standing.2
The state built the first lookout here in 1933, an L-4 ground cab placed at the east end of the ridge to protect private land.2,4,5 A cabin was added in 1940.2,4 That first site was gone by the 1960s.4
The current tower went up in 1963 on the western end of the ridge, replacing the earlier cab.2,3 Its cab is a 14-by-14-foot Department of Natural Resources flattop with a catwalk.2,5 The sources disagree on the rest of the physical details. Some give the tower's height as 20 feet, while TrailChick's header lists 42.1,5,3 They also differ on the gap between the two sites: the Former Fire Lookout Sites register says about a mile, while TrailChick and another history site put it at nearly two miles.4,5,3
Staffing records are scattered. TrailChick reports that Charles Boyer and Irma Huntington staffed the first lookout in 1938.5 A 1955 newspaper item, reprinted on a history site, says the Forest Service had the lookout manned as a ground observer post, with aircraft sightings reported by radio to Randle headquarters for relay to Seattle.3 In the summer of 1967, Kenna Lagerquist of Randle spent part of her college break as a Department of Natural Resources lookout here.3 A 2003 visit report on the register found the tower unstaffed, and its visitor thought staffing was unlikely to return.2
Today the tower works mainly as an electronics site.2 The 2003 visitor found the cab stripped of lookout gear except for a small shelf, which then held repeater cabinets, deep-cycle batteries and charge controllers.2 Solar panels and antennas cover the outside.2 The register records that the land has since been acquired by the Forest Service, and it suggests the electronics use probably saved the tower from removal.2
Access is the hard part. The 2003 visitor found no signs pointing to the tower and walked about six miles past three locked gates to reach it.2 TrailChick says the approach is tricky and roundabout.5 Nothing in the sources describes public visiting. Since the tower is still used as a radio site, check with the Forest Service before setting out, and do not climb the cab or catwalk.
