View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The West Fork Tilton lookout stood in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, in Lewis County, Washington.1 The register lists the site as US 1304 and gives a registration date of June 20, 2012.1

The register says the lookout was built in 1934 as a 20-foot wooden L-4 tower.1 Willhite thinks something may have stood on the spot before then, but he describes the first structure as built in 1934.2 Panorama photographs were taken at the site on July 14, 1934,3 and Willhite says those pictures show a nearby shed and an outhouse.2

A washingtonlookouts listing gives an activation from October 1, 1942 to June 21, 1943, under the Seattle Filter Center.3

The register says the tower was removed in the 1950s. Firelookout.com and Willhite say it was destroyed around then, so the sources disagree on how it ended.1,4,2 The washingtonlookouts list marks it as removed.3

Willhite found the site by comparing 1934 photographs with Google Earth for several hours; it sits at a four-way road intersection.2 In 2015 he dug a spot he had picked, and it revealed a foundation. He says not much remains.2

The route runs through West Fork Timber property. Signs say no trespassing just inside the gate, and Willhite advises asking the company for permission before going in.2 None of the pages we read describes a standing structure today.1,4,2,3
