View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 4.0 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

A cupola cabin went up on West Point Butte in 1925.1,2,3 The butte sits in Skamania County, in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.1 In 1934 the panoramic photographs were taken from the bottom-level windows, about five feet off the ground, not from the upper cupola.3

In 1955 the cupola was replaced with an L-4 cab.1,2,3 Willhite's page says the new cab went on a slightly higher knob nearby, not the original site.3 It advises visitors to go up both knobs, because each once held a lookout.3

The L-4 cab is now gone.1,2 According to Willhite, the cab's footings all remain on the high point.3 A 2019 photo of the summit, looking north toward St. Helens, marks the original site at left.3

Access is by road and a short hike.3 The page gives a hiking distance of half a mile and an elevation gain of 500 feet.3 It describes a west approach, road 54 to road 57 and then spur 5704, and cautions that the last spur has some large potholes.3 A trail follows the old road nearly to the top.3 Where the road ends, the original trail heads off on the right and climbs by a faint tread to the summit.3 No closure appears in the sources read.
