Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Bagley fire tower stands on Depot Lane in the Bagley area of Oconto County, Wisconsin. The state's Architecture and History Inventory dates it to October 1939, lists the Wisconsin Conservation Commission as its architect, and says the Department of Natural Resources staffed it during the spring fire season until 2009.1 The National Historic Lookout Register describes it as a standard Wisconsin tower, 100 feet tall, with its ladder on the outside and protected, and gives the same October 1939 build date.2

The record may hide an earlier tower. A federal survey station description, written in 1934, calls the station the center of the Bagley fire lookout and describes a 73-foot steel tower erected there in 1932.3 A lookout directory lists an earlier Bagley site, marked "first," as gone.4 A July 1939 Green Bay Press-Gazette item, quoted on a Forest Lookouts page, reports that work was under way on a new tower at Bagley.3 The sources do not say whether the 1939 tower replaced the 1932 one.

The tower has not been demolished, and the state record says it is not on the National or State Register.1 The Register recorded it on June 19, 2017, as US 1209, WI 15.2

In a Wisconsin Public Radio report, DNR officials said the state will no longer use its 72 fire lookout towers. The DNR plans to add airplane monitoring instead, and officials said 90 percent of forest fires are now reported by citizens.5 The report is undated in the copy read, so the timing of that decision is not confirmed here.

A Wisconsin travel article calls the Mountain Fire Lookout Tower in the Nicolet forest the last Wisconsin fire tower that visitors can still climb.6 That is a different, National Register-listed tower in the same county, so do not confuse the two.7 The sources read give no current access rules for the Bagley tower, so this account cannot say whether the public may approach it. Anyone curious should ask the DNR before going near the site.
