Story

Researched 8 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The National Historic Lookout Register describes the Brule Lookout as a standard Wisconsin design, 80 feet tall, with a protected ladder on its outside, and dates its construction to 1932.1 The tower sits at about 1,362 feet above sea level, and the register lists the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as its administrator.1

A second listing, from Central US Lookouts, places the site inside the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.2 The two sources describe the setting differently, and the records do not settle who holds the land.1,2

The tower was staffed at least as late as 1950.3 A Forest History Society photo caption identifies Raymond Thompson as a fire guard at Brule Tower that year, photographed locating a blaze with a firefinder.3 Forest Service lookouts widely relied on the Osborne Firefinder through the 20th century.3 The instrument let them fix a fire's position from the direction of its smoke.3

In December 2015 the Wisconsin DNR announced plans to stop using its lookout towers.4 An assessment earlier that year found that the 72 towers, still in use to varying degrees, cost more to keep up than they were worth for fire detection.4 The sources do not say whether Brule was among the towers sold, given away or removed, or whether anyone still staffs it.4,1

The Forest Fire Lookout Association still lists the tower as standing.5 The register added it on August 16, 2017.1 The sources give no public visiting hours, climbing days or rental details, so anyone interested should ask the land manager before planning a trip.1
