View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.9 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The register describes the Meteor Lookout as a 100-foot Aermotor tower with a stairway in the US Forest Service style, and it gives the build date as November 1934.1 The lookout is in Sawyer County, Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources administered it.1

The register recorded the lookout on June 28, 2017.1 Its description still uses the present tense, yet the Forest Fire Lookout Association's Wisconsin list marks the tower as gone.1,2

A weather map site has a page titled "Meteor Hills Radio Tower," and its address places that page in Sawyer County.3 The name may refer to the same site, but no source ties that radio tower to the old lookout, and no source describes what, if anything, remains of the lookout itself.
