View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and its recorded height.

Downloads about 3.6 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

The Monahan Lookout stood in Vilas County, Wisconsin, on a small, high, wooded knob that scouts picked out in 1934.1,2 The land had been bought for back taxes in 1932 by Edmund and Matilda Drager. Mr. Drager then granted the government an easement so the tower could be built.1,2

The tower was a 100-foot Model MC-39 Aermotor steel tower with a 7-by-7-foot cab and an inside stairway.1 The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources administered it.1

The National Historic Lookout Register recorded the tower in 2004, and the Former Fire Lookout Sites register added the site in 2023.1,2

The Former Fire Lookout Sites page says the tower was removed by August 2023.2 The Forest Fire Lookout Association's Wisconsin list marks it as gone.3

A photo on the Former Fire Lookout Sites page is captioned as a USGS survey marker shown after the demolition, and that marker is the only remnant the sources describe. No source describes the site itself today.2
