View from the cab

What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.

This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.

Downloads about 3.1 MB of terrain data the first time.

Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story

Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

Jelm Mountain rises about 25 miles southwest of Laramie, in Albany County.1 The lookout was a cab on a 10-foot stone base.1 The listings name the Bureau of Land Management as the agency, though the 1938 order reserved the land for the Forest Service.1,2

In December 1938 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an order setting aside a tract on the mountain for a Forest Service lookout.2 In June 1946 new automatic radio relay equipment at the lookout was set to catch messages from other lookouts and from rangers' traveling transmitters, then rebroadcast them to the Laramie forest office.2

The listings name Margaret Evans as lookout personnel in 1945, and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Bartell in 1950.1 In June 1953 two women, Lola Falkenhain and Elizabeth Sinclair, opened the station.2 The 1953 article gave the summit as 9,665 feet, while the university gives 9,656 feet.2,3

The listing says the cab was taken down in 1977 to clear room for a university astronomical observatory.1 The summit now holds the university's Wyoming Infrared Observatory, completed in September 1977.3

The observatory is in use every clear night by university astronomers and students.3 Public daytime tours are available through the Physics & Astronomy Department, and reservations are required.3 No source describes any remains of the lookout cab today.
