View from the cab
What the lookout saw from its cab: every ridge out to about 93 miles, the named peaks in sight, and other fire lookouts within view, worked out from terrain data in your browser.
This lookout is gone. The view is reconstructed from its recorded site and a typical height for a lookout like it.
Downloads about 3.8 MB of terrain data the first time.
Or see what it could see on the map: the ground in its line of sight.

Story
Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
A new fire tower went up on Windy Mountain in Park County in 1940, about six miles south of the Crandall Ranger Station.1,2 A Shoshone National Forest handbook printed in 1941 lists fire towers that were under construction or planned, and mentions a new tower on Clayton Mountain as well.3
The tower was expected to give a view over much of the North Absaroka wilderness, including ground burned in the Crandall Creek fire of 1935.2 The register says the cabin looks like a modified L-4 and resembles a Region 5 BC-301, and that it stands on an open timber tower 20 feet high.1
The register's photos include a 1959 view of the lookout.1
The register gives no removal date, and says all that remains at the site are the tower piers.1 A lookout-history listing marks the tower as gone.4
No source describes the site beyond those piers. The register added the site on May 1, 2022.1
