Story

Researched 9 Oct 2026, fact-checked.

In October 1909 state fire superintendents decided to add a lookout on Moosehead Mountain, on the Raquette River northwest of Piercefield in St. Lawrence County, to the observation posts already running: six in the Adirondacks and three in the Catskills.1 A 20-foot tower was set up there by June 1910.1 By 1916 a 40-foot Aermotor LS-25 steel tower with external ladder access had been erected. The source does not say whether it replaced the first tower.1

W.D. Pond of Childwood was appointed a forest observer for Moosehead Mountain in July 1911, for the fire season, at $60 a month.1 In April 1950 a newspaper reported that Mrs. Pearl Eakins of Conifer would again be the observer, and called her the only woman observer in Northern New York.1 In 1978 a private party took the tower down and stored it for later re-assembly.1

In 2016 Dave Vana of Davana LLC refurbished the tower and re-erected it in a courtyard at Industry City, a row of industrial warehouses on the Sunset Park waterfront in Brooklyn.2,3 The chapter's 2016 annual report says it went back up in October.4 The state newsletter that November marked its birthday, calling it 100 years old and still standing.2

The Todd Group, which installed the courtyard, says Industry City has three public courtyards and that an old fire tower was set up there as a vertical element.3 A visitor's blog from May 2021 found that the first flight of stairs had been removed, so the tower cannot be climbed.5 We found no later report. Please do not try to climb it, and check with Industry City before you visit.
