Story
Researched 10 Oct 2026, fact-checked.
Moosehead Mountain, northwest of Piercefield in St. Lawrence County, got a fire lookout in 1910.1 In October 1909 the state's fire superintendents had decided to build one there, to back up six stations in the Adirondacks and three in the Catskills.1 The first tower was 20 feet tall and cost $442.26.1
A 40-foot Aermotor LS-25 steel tower with external ladder access went up in 1916.1 A 2016 state newsletter called the tower 100 years old, which fits that later structure.2
Forest observers worked the mountain during the fire season.1 In July 1911 W.D. Pond was appointed to it at $60 a month.1 In 1950 a newspaper reported that Mrs. Pearl Eakins would again be on the mountain, and named her the sole woman observer in Northern New York.1
In 1978 a private party dismantled the tower and stored it for later re-assembly.1 In October 2016 Dave Vana of Davana LLC refurbished it and re-erected it in Brooklyn.3,2
Today the tower stands in a courtyard between warehouses on the Industry City campus.2 The Todd Group, a landscape contractor that installed one of Industry City's courtyards, says the campus has three public courtyards.4 A May 2021 blog post says the tower cannot be climbed, because its lowest flight of stairs has been taken out.5 The Forest Fire Lookout Association lists the Moosehead Mountain site as gone, and no source we read describes what, if anything, remains on the mountain.6
