Your first visit
Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.
First step: Fill in the online volunteer application linked from the Academy's volunteer page, then email volunteers@ansp.org about open roles. The application runs through an outside volunteer-management system..
Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.
What to expect
Expect a regular shift of half a day to several days a week for at least a year. Collections assistants work in departments such as botany, entomology, ornithology and the library, on weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm, and lab volunteers support the Patrick Center for Environmental Research. The page does not mention training, orientation or fees.
Newcomer welcome
Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: An online application and a commitment of at least a year on a regular weekly shift come first. The steps are clear, but the page describes no orientation or training..
