Your first visit
Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.
First step: Apply through the online volunteer form linked on the city's adult education page, then email adultedu@phila.gov with any questions..
You need to sign up first.
What to expect
You take a free training of about 10 to 12 hours, hosted by subject experts, before you are matched with a learner. After matching, the education provider supports you and offers ongoing professional development. The page does not say how much time each week a tutor gives or whether sessions are in person or online, so ask before you apply.
Tips for your first visit
- Email adultedu@phila.gov to ask when the next tutor training starts.
- Plan on the full 10 to 12 hours of training before you meet a learner.
Newcomer welcome
Fine for newcomers, but you may need to speak up (3 out of 5). Why we say this: There is a clear public application path, and training comes before any learner is matched. The page does not say how long a match takes or what screening applies..
