Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Register for a Sankofa Community Farm volunteer day on the garden's event page, where you sign your own waiver. Welcome Volunteer applications are closed, so you can join the interest list instead..

Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.

What to expect

A volunteer day runs from 9:30 am to noon on a Saturday and meets at the farm at Bartram's Garden. The work is outdoors with farm staff, such as planting, harvesting, weeding, removing invasive plants, and helping the orchard, and no special skills are needed. The listing does not say what to bring or wear or whether tools are supplied, so check the event page before you go.

Tips for your first visit

  • Register on the event page first and sign your own waiver, since each person registers separately.
  • Public restrooms are open daily, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
  • Parking is free in the loop from 54th Street, along 51st Street, and along 56th Street, but on-site spots are limited.

Newcomer welcome

Welcoming to newcomers (4 out of 5). Why we say this: The volunteer page says no special skills or past experience are needed, and it walks through how to register and sign the waiver..
