Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling (BCYC)

Also called: Bicycle Coalition, Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling

What they do

Riders go to practices and events such as group rides, and can join a youth advisory council. Volunteers help at events, join practices, and keep athletes' bikes in good shape through the BCYC Pit Crew and Pedal Partner roles. The group pays its coaches and does not require racing experience for them.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Fill in the online youth application linked from the program page. Staff follow up about team placement..

Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.

What to expect

Riders begin in the Core program at one of eight partner sites, with practices and events such as group rides. Moving up to an All Star team, which runs in summer and fall, takes meeting attendance goals and passing written and on-bike tests, according to a 2024 post on the group's site. All Stars can take a bike home while they stay active in the program.

Tips for your first visit

  • Ask staff which partner site is closest to you when they follow up about placement.
  • Email habib@bicyclecoalition.org or call 215-242-9253 with questions about the program.
  • If you would rather help first, use the volunteer interest form on the volunteer page.

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: A public online application comes first, and the page does not describe a first practice. The Core level is the entry point for new riders, which helps, but the application comes before any contact..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Free. Athlete fees are not stated on the page. Riders are outfitted with equipment from community and sponsor donations.
