What they do

Deliver and plant street trees on planting days, and help the tree committee. The host property must give volunteers access to water and mulch on planting day, and the owner waters the tree, especially in its first year.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Contact a Tree Tender co-chair listed on the group's Tree Tenders page, or send the general volunteer form on the Chestnut Hill Community Association site, to join the committee or a planting day. To get a tree, apply online through the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society..

You need to sign up first.

What to expect

On a planting day, volunteers deliver bareroot trees and plant them at properties that were approved to receive one. The host must give volunteers access to water and mulch that day. The page does not say what time a planting starts or how long it lasts, so ask a co-chair.

Tips for your first visit

  • If a tree is going in at your property, give volunteers access to water and mulch on planting day.
  • A tree application must be accepted by both the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the City, which checks that utilities and easements are clear.

Newcomer welcome

Fine for newcomers, but you may need to speak up (3 out of 5). Why we say this: Anyone can contact a co-chair or use the general volunteer form, and the page posts the planting months openly..
