Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Call the school at (215) 400-3100 and ask for a community school coordinator, then ask which volunteer roles are open right now..

You need to sign up first.

What to expect

Before any shift, you finish a packet of school and city paperwork that includes Pennsylvania child abuse history and criminal background checks. Volunteers support after school and family programs, along with student access to groceries and the garden. Shift times and length are not on the pages we could read, so ask the coordinators.

Tips for your first visit

  • Ask which role needs help before you start the paperwork
  • Gather the documents for each check, since the packet lists several
  • Ask what days and hours the shifts run, since the pages do not say

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: Volunteers must complete school and city clearances before they start, and the way in runs through the coordinators..

Requirements

Pennsylvania child clearances

This group works with children. Pennsylvania law says adults who volunteer with children need clearances. The usual ones are a child abuse history check and a State Police criminal record check. Some people also need an FBI fingerprint check. Ask the group which ones you need and how to get them. For unpaid volunteers, the clearances last five years.
