Your first visit
Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.
First step: Complete the clearances listed on the City's volunteer portal, then sign up there for an open grocery or events shift..
Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.
What to expect
Volunteers must finish the clearances before their first shift, so the first step is paperwork rather than a visit. The listing does not say how long a shift lasts.
Tips for your first visit
- Start the clearances early, since they must be finished before any shift.
- Ask the Community Schools office which opening is current before you sign up.
Newcomer welcome
Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: A first shift needs several school and state clearances, so the way in is paperwork first. The school's own site describes no volunteer route..

Requirements
Pennsylvania child clearances
This group works with children. Pennsylvania law says adults who volunteer with children need clearances. The usual ones are a child abuse history check and a State Police criminal record check. Some people also need an FBI fingerprint check. Ask the group which ones you need and how to get them. For unpaid volunteers, the clearances last five years.
- This group asks for a background check.
