Your first visit
Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.
First step: Call the school at (215) 400-7050 and ask the Community School Coordinator about the next grocery or pantry shift, and which clearances to complete first..
You need to sign up first.
What to expect
Expect a paperwork step before your first shift, since the volunteer listing asks for district and state clearances and a city release form. Shifts involve handing out groceries each week, working the food and clothing pantries, and helping at events such as resource fairs. Neither the school site nor the city page gives shift length, so ask the coordinator.
Tips for your first visit
- Ask the coordinator which entrance to use and where to check in.
- Ask early which clearances must be finished before your first shift.
Newcomer welcome
Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: Volunteers need district and state clearances and a city release form before a first shift, and the school site does not explain how to start. The way in takes paperwork and a call to the coordinator..

Requirements
Pennsylvania child clearances
This group works with children. Pennsylvania law says adults who volunteer with children need clearances. The usual ones are a child abuse history check and a State Police criminal record check. Some people also need an FBI fingerprint check. Ask the group which ones you need and how to get them. For unpaid volunteers, the clearances last five years.
- This group asks for a background check.
