What they do

Youth join a local unit by age: Cub Scouts for ages 5 to 10, Scouts BSA for ages 11 to 17, Venturing and Sea Scouts for ages 14 to 20, and Exploring for ages 10 to 20. Adults can take unit roles such as Scoutmaster, Cubmaster or committee member, after youth safety training and Pennsylvania clearances, with an online application at beascout.org that carries a fee.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Find a program near you at beascout.scouting.org, or call the service center at 610-688-6900 to ask which unit is closest..

What to expect

Each unit sets its own meeting times, so the first visit depends on the unit you contact. For adult leaders, the first steps are safeguarding training, Pennsylvania clearances, and a registration application with a fee. Clearances are free for most volunteers and valid for five years.

Tips for your first visit

  • Call 610-688-6900 to ask which unit is closest to you before you go.
  • For an adult role, fingerprints are required unless you have lived in Pennsylvania for 10 or more consecutive years.
  • Save your safeguarding training certificate as a PDF, since you need its Scouting America ID number later.

Newcomer welcome

Fine for newcomers, but you may need to speak up (3 out of 5). Why we say this: Families get a clear route to a unit and a phone line to ask. Adult leaders finish safeguarding training and Pennsylvania clearances before they take a role, which takes time before a first visit..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Cost not known yet. The council pages do not state a youth membership fee. Adult volunteer applications carry a registration fee, and the amount is not stated.

Requirements

Pennsylvania child clearances

This group works with children. Pennsylvania law says adults who volunteer with children need clearances. The usual ones are a child abuse history check and a State Police criminal record check. Some people also need an FBI fingerprint check. Ask the group which ones you need and how to get them. For unpaid volunteers, the clearances last five years.
