Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Come to a Wednesday dance at the Merion building, arriving by 7:30 pm for the new dancer orientation. You do not need a partner..

You can just show up.

What to expect

The evening runs from a 7:30 pm orientation to dancing that ends around 10:15 pm. Every dance is taught before it is called, so you learn as you go, and partners change through the evening. Admission is on a sliding scale, and no experience or partner is needed.

Tips for your first visit

  • Wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes that will not slip or catch on a wood floor.
  • Arrive by 7:30 pm for the orientation.
  • The Merion building sits back from Montgomery Avenue and is hard to see from the road. Look for the driveway with old-style street lamps.
  • At Summit Presbyterian Church, park on the uphill side of Greene Street only, and do not park on Westview Street.

Newcomer welcome

Very welcoming to newcomers (5 out of 5). Why we say this: A short orientation for new dancers runs before the Wednesday dance, admission is drop-in, and passes are offered to anyone who cannot pay..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Low cost. Wednesday dances are sliding scale, about $7 to $15 or more. First Saturday afternoon workshops cost about $10 to $15 or more, and evening dances about $15 to $25 or more. Barn dances cost $5 to $10 for adults and $3 to $5 for children and teens. Teen dances cost $5, or $10 to support the live music fund. Passes are available for anyone who cannot pay the listed price.
