What they do

Girls join a troop, or register as an individual member if no troop fits. Adults can start a troop, help an existing troop with skills, the cookie program or chaperoning, share first aid or outdoor skills, join a council committee, or mentor girls working toward the Silver and Gold Awards. Adult volunteers must be 18 or older.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Use the Find a Troop search on gsep.org to get a list of troops near you, or fill in the volunteer interest form. Adults who want to lead a troop can start with the leader interest form..

What to expect

Girls join a troop after paying the yearly membership, and each troop sets its own meeting times and place. Adult volunteers complete a state compliance packet (police, child abuse and FBI checks) and two online courses before a role is approved.

Tips for your first visit

  • Ask the troop leader whether a girl can visit one meeting before joining.
  • Adult volunteers have 30 days after choosing a role to finish the compliance steps.
  • Gather the 3 to 4 compliance documents before starting, since partial submissions cause delays.
  • Compliance questions go to memberservices@gsep.org with 'Compliance' in the subject line.

Low cost. Girl members pay $25 a year and adult members pay $30 a year. The membership year runs from October 1 to September 30.

Requirements

Pennsylvania child clearances

This group works with children. Pennsylvania law says adults who volunteer with children need clearances. The usual ones are a child abuse history check and a State Police criminal record check. Some people also need an FBI fingerprint check. Ask the group which ones you need and how to get them. For unpaid volunteers, the clearances last five years.
