What they do

Girls join a 3rd to 5th grade team or a 6th to 8th grade team for a 10-week season that ends in a 5K. Adults coach a team, high school students can serve as junior coaches, and volunteers can help at the 5K or with one-time and project work.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Apply through the coach sign-up link on the program's coach page, or sign up on the volunteer page to help at the 5K..

Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.

What to expect

Coaches lead 90-minute practices twice a week for about 10 weeks, usually in the late afternoon, using materials the program supplies. Before the season, coaches complete about 3.5 hours of online training and about 3 hours of in-person training with program staff.

Tips for your first visit

  • Plan for about 3 hours a week of practice time, plus the 5K day.
  • At least one coach per team needs CPR certification, and the program can help arrange it.
  • Team sites are not named on the program pages, so check the locations page for where teams meet.
  • Junior coaches are high school students who help the coaches and serve as role models.

Newcomer welcome

Fine for newcomers, but you may need to speak up (3 out of 5). Why we say this: No running experience is needed to coach, and the 5K volunteer sign-up is open to anyone. Coaches must finish training and a background check before the season, and the site does not describe a visit first..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Paid. Registration is $225 per girl each season. Families with household income under $100,000 a year can apply for a reduced fee, and a two-payment plan is offered. The fee covers a shirt, a water bottle, practice snacks, lesson materials, 5K entry and a finisher's medal.
