What they do

Families can email mentoring@luckymp.org with the subject 'Mentoring Request' to ask for a mentor. People who want to help can email development@luckymp.org with the subject 'Volunteer Opportunities', and volunteers upload child abuse and criminal clearances on the Volunteer Corner page. Mentoring tracks cover leadership, academics and career planning.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Families: email mentoring@luckymp.org with the subject 'Mentoring Request'. Volunteers: email development@luckymp.org, and upload your child abuse and criminal clearances on the Volunteer Corner page..

You need to sign up first.

What to expect

The site does not describe a mentoring session or how often a mentor and young person meet. It says mentoring is offered monthly and weekly, and names service areas in Germantown, North Philadelphia, Kensington and East Falls. Families start by emailing the mentoring address, and the site lists no fee for families or volunteers.

Tips for your first visit

  • Check the age track first: leadership and academic mentoring is for ages 5 to 15, and career path mentoring is for ages 16 to 24.
  • Volunteers should expect to upload child abuse and criminal clearances.

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: Families can email to request a mentor, but the site does not explain intake or matching. Volunteers are asked to upload child abuse and criminal clearances..

Requirements

Pennsylvania child clearances

This group works with children. Pennsylvania law says adults who volunteer with children need clearances. The usual ones are a child abuse history check and a State Police criminal record check. Some people also need an FBI fingerprint check. Ask the group which ones you need and how to get them. For unpaid volunteers, the clearances last five years.
