Your first visit
Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.
First step: Book a free tour through the website, then ask about membership before you plan a class or a project on the machines..
Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.
What to expect
A free tour walks you through the North Philadelphia space, including the jewelry, sewing, woodworking, metal, and laser cutting areas. Before you use the machines, you finish an online orientation and then pass a proficiency check, a private lesson, or a class. Ask when you book how long a tour runs.
Tips for your first visit
- Book the tour through the website before you come.
- Free on-site parking is open to visitors as well as members.
- Check the events page for free public gatherings that non-members can join.
- Ask an instructor before you bring any power tools or unusual items.
Newcomer welcome
Fine for newcomers, but you may need to speak up (3 out of 5). Why we say this: Free tours and public events let you see the space before you pay, but classes and shop use need a paid membership and a proficiency check..
Cost and commitment
- Cost
- Paid. Membership is needed for classes and shop use: $149 a month, month to month, or $134.10 a month on a yearly agreement. A discounted $129 a month applies to students, educators, military, seniors, first responders and others. Tours are free.
- How often
- About once a month
Access and languages
- Wheelchair access
- Partly wheelchair accessible
- Languages spoken
- English
- Access notes
- The building is described as ADA compliant, with a paved, ramped entrance, a load-in garage, and gender-neutral restrooms near the workshops. Some workshop areas and machines may be hard to use for some physical disabilities, so ask about accommodations. Classes assume you can follow instruction in English on your own. Nearest SEPTA rail, per the FAQ: the Berks stop on the Market-Frankford Line, about five blocks east. Bus Routes 3 and 57 and the Girard Avenue trolley also run nearby.
Requirements
What to bring or wear: You may bring your own hand tools. Power tools and unusual items need instructor permission first.
