Neighborhood or civic group

North of Washington Avenue Coalition

North of Washington Avenue Coalition is a Registered Community Organization (RCO) in the South part of the city. The City asks developers to talk with RCOs about nearby zoning and building plans, so this is a way for neighbors to have a say.

Saved in this browser only.

What they do

The coalition works on affordable housing, zoning, parking, and utility and tax issues for the area, with a goal of development that does not push out current residents. Neighbors can sign its petition and read its conservation overlay report and proposed guidelines.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Sign the coalition's petition, which is linked from nowacphila.org, or email northofwashingtonavecoalition@gmail.com to ask how to get involved. No meeting schedule is posted..

What to expect

The site does not describe meetings, so it is not clear what a visit would look like. Most of the public material is reports and guidelines about zoning and housing, and news is shared on its Facebook page. Ask the coalition for the next meeting or action before you go.

Tips for your first visit

  • Email first, since no meeting time or place is posted.
  • Read the conservation overlay report on the site to see what the coalition is working on.

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: Residents can sign a petition or send an email, but the site posts no meeting times, membership steps, or volunteer options, so the way in is unclear..
