Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Pick a role on the volunteer page and submit the volunteer application, or fill out the online foster sign-up form and watch the onboarding video.

Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.

What to expect

Volunteers start with an application, and the site does not say what orientation includes or how long a shift lasts. Fostering comes with medical care paid by PAWS and supplies if you want them, but you provide a safe, separate space for cats and a way to keep dogs apart from resident pets. Typical foster stays run three to eight weeks or longer.

Tips for your first visit

  • Check the volunteer page for current openings at each location
  • Call or email the location before you go: Old City 215-238-9901, Grays Ferry 215-298-9680
  • Foster questions go to foster@phillypaws.org
