Program
Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee Clean Block Program
Block captains and the city's More Beautiful Committee organize Saturday cleanups by police district each spring and summer, working with the Department of Sanitation. A yearly Clean Block Contest judges a set of registered blocks, and every contest block receives cash.

What they do
Join your block's Saturday cleanup and bag the litter for pickup, or ask PMBC for a block captain petition, which needs signatures from 51% of the residents on your block, one adult per household.

Your first visit
Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.
First step: Call PMBC at (215) 685-3971 to find out whether your block has a captain and when your police district's Saturday is..
Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.
What to expect
A cleanup is a Saturday on your block, run by your block captain with the clean block officer for your police district. PMBC can provide tools, supplies, and street cleaning help, and residents pick up litter and bag it for pickup. The site does not give a start time or how long the cleanup takes.
Tips for your first visit
- Bag the litter and set the bags at either end of the block for pickup.
- Do not sweep trash or dirt into storm drains, and keep cars off the street while you work.
- Bulk or household trash is not collected on cleanup Saturdays, so keep it out of the bags.
Newcomer welcome
Fine for newcomers, but you may need to speak up (3 out of 5). Why we say this: Residents join through their block captain, and PMBC publishes a phone line to find one, so the way in is clear but needs a call first..
