What they do

Young people apply to Doing Good, a semester program where teams plan an arts-focused service project, or to Instruments for Success, a fall program that helps high school seniors with college and career applications. Alumni and School District of Philadelphia students can also join the Youth Advocacy Council, which meets twice a month and pays a stipend.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: On the Doing Good page, click Apply for Doing Good and fill in the online form. Seniors can use the Instruments for Success form instead..

Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.

What to expect

Doing Good starts with a few weeks of skills such as budgeting, marketing and event planning. Teams then pitch an arts-focused service project to a panel of experts and receive up to $500 to carry it out. Sessions meet Monday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, and students who meet the attendance rules earn a stipend at the end of the semester.

Tips for your first visit

  • Ask for a SEPTA pass if you need one, since the program provides them.
  • Meals are provided, according to the site.
  • Several SEPTA lines and buses stop within one block of the Temple campus at 1515 Market Street.
  • Send travel questions to Marcus Bryant at mbryant@project440.org.

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: You must apply through an online form before you can take part. Doing Good is limited to 30 students per semester, and the page does not say how students are chosen..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Cost not known yet. The site says SEPTA passes and meals are provided, and students who meet attendance and participation rules earn a stipend at the end of the semester. The program pages do not say in plain words whether there is a fee. The Youth Advocacy Council pays $10 an hour.
