Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Buy a ticket to a Season XVII show, or email volunteer@quintessencetheatre.org to ask about ushering..

You can just show up. No sign up needed.

What to expect

Shows are staged at the Sedgwick Theater on Germantown Avenue, and you can buy tickets in advance or try for a limited $10 rush ticket in person about an hour before curtain. If you usher, you get a free ticket to the show you work and a free concessions item, with no alcohol.

Tips for your first visit

  • Park in the free lot directly across from the theater, or use the unmetered street spaces on Germantown Avenue, which have a 2-hour limit.
  • Take SEPTA Bus 23 to Mount Pleasant Avenue. The site warns that the trip from Center City takes a long time, so allow extra time.
  • Ask for seating accommodations when you buy tickets, in person or online.
  • Volunteers must be 18 or older, or 15 to 17 with a guardian. Email volunteer@quintessencetheatre.org with your availability and interests.

Newcomer welcome

Fine for newcomers, but you may need to speak up (3 out of 5). Why we say this: Shows are open to anyone with a ticket, and the site has an email sign up for volunteers. The adult workshop listed is aimed at working actors and does not say beginners are welcome..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Paid. Tickets are about $30 to $75, with previews at the low end and opening nights at the high end. Youth 18 and under pay $30 to $35, seniors get $5 off full price, active military pay $25 to $30, and a limited number of $10 rush tickets go on sale in person one hour before curtain.

We do not know yet which languages are spoken.
Access notes
The site calls the theater accessible and has an accessible restroom in the lobby. You can ask for seating accommodations when you buy tickets. Some performances have open captioning, but the site does not say which ones. To confirm the entrance and seating, email the box office. SEPTA Bus 23 stops at Mount Pleasant Avenue, and the page names Allen Lane and Sedgwick stations on the Chestnut Hill rail lines nearby.
