Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Fill in the online volunteer application, then call 215-765-9000 ext. 5124 or email seniorcp@pcacares.org with questions about the next steps..

Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.

What to expect

The site does not describe the first visit. Before you serve, you complete a criminal background check and paid pre-service training, though the site does not say which comes first. After that you get four hours of ongoing training each month while you serve about 20 hours a week.

Tips for your first visit

  • Check that you can give about 20 hours a week before you apply, because the application asks about it.
  • Be ready to say how you get around: the application asks about your own car, SEPTA or CCT Connect.
  • Ask when the background check and paid training start, since the site does not say which comes first.

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: You apply, meet an income guideline and pass a criminal background check before service, and the site does not say what a first visit looks like..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Free. No cost to volunteer. Volunteers receive a tax-free hourly stipend, travel and meal reimbursement, and paid holiday, sick and vacation time, and their training is paid.
