Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse

A free play space in East Fairmount Park with a giant wooden slide, an indoor playhouse, and a nature play area. Volunteers have helped with planting, weeding, mulching, story time, crafts, and the yearly appeal mailing.

When and where

Closed Mondays. April to September: Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 7 pm. October to March: Tuesday to Sunday 10 am to 5 pm. The playground closes at dusk in fall and winter, and hours depend on the weather. The site sometimes closes for private events or maintenance, so check the website before you go.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Visit during open hours, with no sign up needed for a daily visit. To volunteer, email Jim Neal, Director of Facilities & Operations, at jim@smithplayground.org or call 215.765.4325 extension 101, since he takes all volunteer questions..

You can just show up. No sign up needed.

What to expect

A daily visit is free and is made for children, and children must always be with an adult. The playground covers about six and a half acres with climbing, swinging and spinning zones, and the Playhouse has three floors of interactive play. Groups of 10 or more children need to book ahead.

Tips for your first visit

  • Check the hours first: the site is closed on Mondays, and the playground closes at dusk in fall and winter.
  • Park in the free lot in front of the Playhouse, or on Reservoir Drive when the lot is full, and do not leave valuables in the car.
  • Bring your own food if you want it, since options within walking distance are very limited. Grilling and BBQing are not allowed.
  • The site is designed mainly for children 10 and under, and a grown-up must supervise every child.

Fine for newcomers, but you may need to speak up (3 out of 5). Why we say this: Daily visits are free and open to the public, and volunteer questions go to one named staff contact. The site does not describe a newcomer program or a first-visit routine..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Free. Daily visits are free. Group visits cost $25 for 11 to 25 children, $50 for 26 to 50, $75 for 51 to 75, and $100 for 76 to 100. Groups of 10 or more children need an advance reservation, and group visits run on weekdays, 10 am to 12 pm or 1 pm to 3 pm.

Service animals are welcome under ADA guidelines, but other animals are not allowed. Bus 32 stops at 33rd and Oxford Streets, then about a third of a mile on foot. Bus 3 stops at 33rd and Cecil B. Moore Streets, then one block south and about a third of a mile on foot; on weekends during visiting hours it runs directly to Smith.
