Neighborhood or civic group

Society Hill Civic Association

A volunteer group that works to keep Society Hill clean, safe and historically intact. It speaks up on zoning and development, runs neighborhood clean-up and tree programs, and keeps residents informed with a weekly update and a bi-monthly paper.

What they do

Members follow zoning and development plans and attend the association's meetings. Neighbors can volunteer on committees. Clean and Beautiful organizes spring and fall clean-up days and tree and sidewalk subsidies, and Safe and Sound handles traffic, trash and crime concerns.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Email info@societyhillcivic.org to ask about the next community meeting or to be matched with a committee chair, or send a message through the contact form on the site..

What to expect

Community meetings are held in the evening at Pennsylvania Hospital's Zubrow Auditorium, and board meetings are held in the evening as well. The site does not say whether non-members can attend, so ask first. Committees cover zoning, safety, clean-up and membership work, and the association will refer a volunteer to a committee chair.

Tips for your first visit

  • Email the association before you come to ask whether non-members can attend.
  • Check the calendar before a board meeting, since some are held at the Physick House.
  • Membership dues are paid yearly, so ask which level fits before you join.

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: The site does not say whether non-members can attend meetings. Its clearest ways in are an email to the association or a yearly membership..

Cost and commitment
