Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Call 215-221-6860 to ask how a young player enrolls. To volunteer as a tutor or coach, fill in the volunteer form and finish the clearances first..

What to expect

Volunteer tutors and coaches work with young players most weekday afternoons, from 4 to 6 pm, and the schedule is set one on one. Before a first shift you need a child abuse clearance, a State Police check and an FBI check, and the site says these last five years. The site does not describe what a family does on a first visit, so ask by phone first.

Tips for your first visit

  • Start the clearances early, since they must be finished before you can volunteer.
  • Call 215-221-6860 before you go, because the site does not describe enrollment steps.
  • Plan around weekday afternoons, when most tutoring and coaching happens.

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: The site gives a phone line for questions but does not describe how a new player or family joins. Volunteers need a form, three clearances and a shift sign up before they can start..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Cost not known yet. The site does not state a program fee. It names two scholarships, the Clif Wright and Carols Kids scholarships, without amounts or eligibility rules.

The contact page names the Broad Street Line, Erie Avenue stop, and the 53 bus from Broad and Erie to the Lenfest Center. The West Philadelphia site is reached from the Market Frankford Line at 34th Street, with a trolley connection to 33rd Street, and visitors check in at the front desk.

Requirements

Pennsylvania child clearances

This group works with children. Pennsylvania law says adults who volunteer with children need clearances. The usual ones are a child abuse history check and a State Police criminal record check. Some people also need an FBI fingerprint check. Ask the group which ones you need and how to get them. For unpaid volunteers, the clearances last five years.
