What they do

Students aged 13 to 19 in the program's groups can apply to the summer festival, which runs about two weeks at Temple University. Composers in the same groups can take an online six-week mini-course at any age from 13 up. The final festival concert in July is free and open to the public.

Your first visit

Feeling unsure the first time is normal. Most groups are glad when someone new walks in.

First step: Students aged 13 to 19 who are female, transgender, nonbinary or genderqueer can apply through the Google form on the festival page, if they can read music in at least one clef. That page still shows the July 2026 session, which has already happened, so email erin@wildflowercomposers.org to ask when the next session opens. Mini-course questions can go to the same address..

Check with the group before you show up. You need to sign up first.

What to expect

The festival runs July 6 to 17 on Temple University's campus. Days include seminars, private composition lessons and expert workshops, and students workshop their pieces with Network for New Music musicians. Each composer writes a new piece that is premiered and recorded on the last day.

Tips for your first visit

  • The final premiere concert at Rock Hall is free and open to the public, needs no advance registration, and is livestreamed.
  • Chaperones walk students between buildings at all times.
  • Tell the program about any dietary restrictions or allergies, since it says it can accommodate them.

Newcomer welcome

Takes some effort for newcomers (2 out of 5). Why we say this: The festival takes applications. The online mini-courses are rolling, but the 2025 sessions were full and the page says to check back, so the way in is unclear..

Cost and commitment

Cost
Paid. Festival tuition is $900, plus $1,400 for room and board for students who live on campus. There is no application fee, and need-based aid, including full scholarships, is available. Each online mini-course is $200, or $375 for two and $900 for five.
